50's Doo-wop
Music Show
Since the
introduction of the classic "doo-wop" sound of the fifties,
there has never been such a widely known group as the Platters.
Their first release Only You went on
the Billboard charts for 22 weeks in 1955, and rose to number 5.
Less than one month later the Platters soared into the spotlight
with their number 1 hit, The Great Pretender.
Though no member of the World Famous Platters from Branson were
a part of the original Platters group you'd never know it from
their exceptionally good performance.
Since their first
two chart toppers The Platters had an incredible string of hits
including: My Prayer,
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Harbor Lights,
Ebb Tide, Red Sails In The
Sunset, If I Didn't Care,
The Magic Touch, and many more.
In 1955, The Platters
signed a recording contract with Mercury Records, which ended up
putting Mercury on the International map.
The Platters
recorded just under 400 songs, sold well over 89 million
records, performed in over 91 countries, and received over 230
awards from all over the world. The Platters have appeared in
twenty-seven movies, some you may remember: "Rock Around The
Clock," "The Girl Can't Help It" (Jane Mansfield,) "Europe By
Night," "Girls Town" (Paul Anka,) "Carnival Rock," and
twenty-two more in Mexico, Spain, France, Italy, Japan, and
Israel. "The Platters" were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall
of Fame in 1990.
Lawrence (Rooster)
